It would seem that testosterone is so studied and so simple, but it still remains the main headache for anti-doping companies. There is a problem of defining, identifying, testosterone in the blood of an athlete at competitions and this serious problem has not been solved to this day.

Testosterone constantly circulates through the blood channels, metabolizing and transforming into 17-keto metabolites, mainly into androsterone. It is these metabolites that are detected in the analysis of urine. The level of the drug in the urine is extremely small. Synthetic testosterone behaves exactly like natural testosterone, and therefore it is extremely difficult to distinguish it from artificial. It was also not possible to measure the peaks and falls of testosterone, so the drug remained an undetectable steroid until 1984.

Testosterone and its problems.

The first to take on the difficult task of identifying testosterone athletes was Manfred Donike, professor and founder of the Institute for Biochemistry of Sports in Cologne. He managed to synthesize the MSTFA reagent, which easily detected artificial testosterone and similar drugs (linked testosterone molecules into compounds that were easy to detect). Also, the professor was the first to guess not to measure the concentration of testosterone and its ratio to the concentration of epitestosterone (when using steroids, this ratio changed in the opposite direction). To announce his discovery, Donica needed thousands of analyzes to prove its truth. And he received such tests for artificial testosterone, somehow he managed to get unopened urine samples from the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. With the help of them, the professor managed to conduct detailed studies and already in 1984, at the Los Angeles Olympics, introduce his analysis for the content of artificial testosterone into widespread use.

There were also opponents, many did not want this analysis to appear in big-time sports. Their main argument was false negative results ( testosterone use for some reason did not always affect the change in the level of T / E, thus giving false test results). Basically, this defect was manifested in athletes with a congenital high content of E (mainly athletes from Asian countries).

Later it turned out that there are also false positive test results, the so-called false doping test, which athletes often had to deal with. Two such cases have been identified. Athletes from Norway and Australia had a stable unchangeable level of T / E, which constantly revealed their analyzes as positive. The athletes were observed for a long time, but their T/E levels did not change. Subsequently, it turned out that a large number of people, 1 in 2.5 thousand, have this feature (studies conducted in Sweden and Switzerland).

Doping test of testosterone athletes.

To confirm positive samples, some revolutionary method was needed, everyone understood this, even Donike himself. The professor made another attempt, he decided to measure the steroid profile, in this case, when taking testosterone, easily detectable distortions appeared. It was for the search for these distortions that Donike undertook. But, as in the case before, this test also had its drawbacks. Perhaps the most important of these was that doping test was relevant only for men, while in women it did not reveal any anomalies or deviations from the norm. And secondly, such distortions could appear under the influence of stressful situations, overtraining, or prolonged illness.

This method has not become a new revolution in the fight against testosterone. However, a couple of times, profile measurements nevertheless declared themselves. GDR sprint star Katrin Krabbe was caught in one of these tests. In 1992, at the Olympic Games in Barcelona, ​​all of her tests were immediately positive. Catherine herself said that it was a fraud and fraud on the part of her ill-wishers. As it turned out in the end, it is almost impossible to prove her guilt. To put it simply, before she entered the study of her doping test, she traveled the world for several weeks and proved that no substitution was possible. The Olympic Committee decided to add clenbuterol to the list of prohibited drugs and sentence Crabbe to 4 years of deprivation of a sports license. From the ethical point of view, this is not the right decision, however, from the point of view of the law, it is possible and fair (by the way, Crabbe is not the only one who was caught using clenbuterol, in the same year, together with Crabbe, Grit Breuer, also an athlete from GDR).

The list of testosterone doping is huge and is expanding every year, even now many athletes do not hesitate to use it. Perhaps the most famous sports star on this list is Ben Johnson. In 1993, he received a life ban. His urinalysis for doping testosterone showed an increased ratio of T to E (the ratio at the time of sampling was at the level of 9, while his, i.e. natural, was on the border of three).

Artificial testosterone and athletes affected by it.

Another star on this list is Dennis Mitchell, a US runner (Olympic and world champion, former world record holder in the 100m sprint). In 1998, his urinalysis showed an unprecedented level of testosterone. However, in his case, everything worked out, the athlete was acquitted, but I want to note that after this incident, Mitchell's career came to naught, his results worsened every year and, in the end, he had to leave the bigger sport.

Also worth remembering is Mary Dekker-Slaney, a famous long-distance runner. The list of her achievements is huge, which is only worth the victory over Soviet athletes in 1983. In 1996, the athlete was caught using testosterone. As a result, the athlete missed the selection for the Olympics and, as a result, the Olympics itself, even despite the protection from NIKE and many athletes from the United States. By the way, along with Mary, Sandra Farmer-Patrick (a 400-meter hurdler) also got caught on testosterone. I forgot to say, both athletes received lengthy disqualifications.

Proved that artificial testosterone with its long-term use, it stops the production of natural testosterone and increases the synthesis of estrogens. This leads to the manifestation of female fat deposits, an increase in the timbre of the voice, etc., it comes to the point that a man's chest begins to grow. Ask bodybuilders, anyone will tell you that this is the problem. But here, too, a solution has been found, today on the market you will not find any antiestrogens and estrogen inhibitors. Now science really does not sleep.

Synthetic testosterone and its natural analogue.

Finally, I want to talk about the lawsuits and the athletes accused of using testosterone. Now most of the steroid drugs and supplements are able to cause an increase in the ratio of T to E. There have been such cases that athletes have been condemned for using steroid supplements, even though they are quietly sold in pharmacies, like regular vitamins or aspirin. But after all, if you think about it, the athlete did not take either the artificial version or testosterone, he took the drug, which is freely available. The same problem with nandrolone, doping tests that determine synthetic testosterone, give a positive result, and the athlete claims that he did not take nandrolone, he just ate a couple of pills, vitamins bought at a pharmacy.
